The speedboat is the most widely used means of transport in the Maldives. It connects Velana International Airport with resorts and local islands across the nearest atolls, and is the only transfer option that operates both day and night. For most travellers, it is the transfer that will take them to their accommodation.

What is a speedboat in the Maldives

In the Maldives, a speedboat is a motorised vessel — typically between 8 and 20 metres long — that covers journeys between islands and between the airport or Malé city and the various atolls of the archipelago. It is the most common way for travellers to reach their local island or resort. They typically carry between 4 and 30 passengers depending on size, and some offer extras such as air conditioning and Wi-Fi.

Unlike the public ferry — which travels slowly, stops at several islands, and only operates on certain days of the week — the speedboat goes directly to your destination and can depart at any time of day or night. Where do speedboats depart from?

Most speedboats heading to resorts and local islands depart directly from the airport jetty at Velana International Airport, located right next to the arrivals terminal. They travel directly to resort islands, and in the case of local islands they dock at the main island jetty — the guesthouse will usually send someone to meet you there.

At the airport you will normally need to go to the domestic terminal and find the desk you have been directed to — staff will then accompany you to the speedboat.

Booking a Speedboat in the Maldives

There are several things to consider when booking a speedboat: the route, schedules, your international flight times, and more. Here we explain everything.

Routes covered by speedboat from Malé

Speedboats do not reach every atoll in the Maldives. There is a practical distance limit — around 2.5 hours — beyond which the journey becomes too uncomfortable or costly in fuel. For more distant destinations, seaplanes or domestic flights are used instead.

Journey times are approximate in good conditions. During the monsoon season (May–October) the sea can be rougher and journeys may take longer or, in extreme cases, be suspended.

For resorts, most transfers are short — between 20 and 50 minutes from North or South Malé Atoll. Resorts further away often have the alternative option of a seaplane at a higher price. Feel free to contact us for advice.

Private speedboat to connect local islands and resorts

One of the most common uses of a private speedboat that few travellers know about in advance is connecting a local island with a resort — or vice versa — during the same trip. If you plan to spend some days at a resort and others at a guesthouse, or you want to visit a local island from your resort for a day trip, a private speedboat is practically the only way to do this without going back through Malé.

Shared or private speedboat: which to choose

When talking about speedboats in the Maldives, there are two very different options in terms of price, flexibility and experience.

The shared speedboat is the standard option for most resorts in North and South Malé Atoll: the resort organises it, collects all guests arriving that day, and they depart together. A private speedboat makes sense when you arrive very late at night, when the resort has no shared service, or when you want to travel from a local island to a resort — a route that virtually no shared service covers.

Speedboat prices in the Maldives

Prices vary considerably depending on distance, whether shared or private, and who operates the service. There are three distinct situations:

Resort transfer (arranged by the accommodation)

Most resorts run their own speedboat service. The price may be included, but it is frequently charged separately — between $50 and $300 per person return depending on the resort and distance. Important: many online booking platforms do not include the transfer in the displayed price. If you have a cancellable booking, contact us — we can offer a rate with transfer included at a very competitive price. And if you are a group, we can take you directly to your resort to save on individual transfer costs.

Shared speedboat to local islands

To reach guesthouses on local islands such as Maafushi, Thulusdhoo or Rasdhoo, there are private operators offering shared speedboats that depart several times a day. Prices range from $25 to $100 per person one way. You can book online in advance or sometimes buy the ticket directly at the Malé jetty on the day, though in high season it is worth securing your seat ahead of time.

Private speedboat

A private speedboat is chartered for the full journey regardless of the number of passengers. Prices start at around $150 for short transfers and can exceed $1,000 for more distant atolls such as Ari. For a group, the per-person cost can be competitive compared to a shared boat. It is also the only viable option for travelling directly between a local island and a resort without going through Malé — in these cases it becomes a very practical way to save both time and money. How to book a speedboat

To a local island

For popular local islands like Maafushi or Thulusdhoo, several speedboat companies offer online booking. You can also buy your ticket directly at the Malé jetty on the day. If you need more flexibility or are heading to a less common destination, a private speedboat is the solution — contact us to arrange it.

To a resort

This is normally arranged through your resort once booked — you simply provide your flight details and they coordinate the speedboat. As mentioned above, we can also quote for the resort with transfers included.

Combining a local island and a resort

One way to experience both sides of the Maldives is to combine a resort stay with time on a local island, using a private speedboat to travel directly between them. This works best with nearby islands — the boat will usually be arranged from the local island side, though permission from the resort is required. Contact us and we can handle all the logistics.

Practical tips for your speedboat journey

• Seasickness: Longer journeys — especially to Ari Atoll — can be rough in windy or rainy conditions. If you are prone to motion sickness, take preventive medication before boarding and sit in the middle of the boat, not at the bow.
• Luggage: There is no official luggage limit as with seaplanes, but speedboats have limited storage space. Very large suitcases can be a problem on smaller vessels. If you are travelling with a lot of luggage, confirm with the operator beforehand.
• Night arrivals: Unlike seaplanes, speedboats operate at night without restriction. If your flight arrives late and your resort is in North or South Malé Atoll, it is perfectly possible to reach your accommodation that same night.
• Clothing: You will get sea spray during the journey. Keep a light layer handy, especially for longer or night-time transfers.
• Rainy season: Between May and October the sea can be rougher. Journeys over an hour are noticeably more affected. Services are rarely cancelled, but comfort decreases.

When a speedboat is not the right option

Speedboats have their limits. They are not the right choice if:

• Your resort is in an outer atoll such as Baa, Noonu, Raa or Haa Alif — the distance is too great and you will need a seaplane or domestic flight.
• You have serious motion sickness issues and the journey exceeds an hour — a seaplane or domestic flight is a more comfortable alternative.
• You want to connect two islands with no direct shared service — in that case only a private speedboat is viable, and the cost rises considerably.
