Unlike shared speedboats, where several independent groups travel together and the boat may stop at multiple islands along the way, on a private speedboat the vessel is yours alone — you leave when you need to and go directly to your island with no detours.
When does a private speedboat make sense?
It’s not always necessary, but there are situations where it makes a lot of sense:
- Islands with no regular route. Some resorts or local islands don’t have a shared transfer service. The only way to get there is by private boat. This is especially useful when combining local islands with nearby resorts on the same trip. Feel free to ask us.
- Groups. Above a certain group size, the per-person cost of a private speedboat gets close to that of a shared transfer — and the experience is noticeably better and tailored to your schedule. For larger groups, a private transfer to your island or resort can actually work out cheaper than going shared.
- Honeymoon or special trip. Arriving at your resort is part of the experience. Doing it privately, without strangers alongside you, makes a difference from the very first moment.
- Schedule flexibility. If your flight arrives at an unusual hour or you need to leave your resort at a specific time, the private speedboat adapts to you — not the other way around.
The onboard experience
Most private speedboats in Maldives are fast, modern vessels with capacity ranging from 4 to over 40 passengers. The journey takes you between spectacular islands. Depending on the distance to your resort, the trip can last anywhere from 20 minutes to 3 hours.

How to book
The most common approach is for the resort itself to arrange the private speedboat — especially in luxury resorts, where the transfer is part of the service. When you confirm your booking, the resort will ask for your international flight arrival time and coordinate the transfer from Velana International Airport to the island.
Independent operators also exist, but their prices are rarely better than the resort’s, and coordination tends to be more complex. Estimated prices for a private speedboat in Maldives
The price of a private speedboat in Maldives is paid for the whole boat, not per person. The more people you are, the cheaper it works out per head. Approximate 2026 price ranges by journey length:
- Short routes (up to 30 min): $100–300 per one-way trip
- Medium routes (30 min – 1h): $300–600 per trip
- Long routes (over 1h): $600–1,200 per trip
These prices are per full boat, one way. Many resorts offer a combined round-trip package. Keep in mind that for very remote atolls, the most common option is not the speedboat but the seaplane or domestic flight.
Luggage on a private speedboat
One of the advantages of a private speedboat over the seaplane is that there are no strict luggage limits. The boat has a storage hold and you can bring large suitcases without worrying about weight. That said, be aware that if there are waves, luggage can get wet during the crossing — so waterproof bags or suitcase covers are a sensible precaution.

- Give the exact time of your international flight. The resort needs to synchronise the transfer with your arrival at Velana. A timing error can mean a long wait at the airport.
- Private speedboats also operate at night. Unlike the seaplane, you can arrive late and the private transfer can still be coordinated.
- For groups, compare the cost per person. From 4 people upwards, the price difference compared to a shared transfer is usually small — and the experience is far superior.
- Bring a light layer for the journey. Out on the water at speed, the wind can feel surprisingly cool even when it’s tropical on land. A light hoodie or long-sleeved top is enough.
- If you’re prone to motion sickness, take precautions. Fast speedboats can move significantly in choppy water. A preventive motion sickness tablet before the journey is a good idea if you’re sensitive.
