Domestic Flight in Maldives
A domestic flight in Maldives is the solution for reaching the most remote atolls in the archipelago — those too distant for a seaplane and beyond the reach of any speedboat in a reasonable time. If your resort is in the south of the country, in atolls such as Addu, Laamu or Fuvahmulah, you will almost certainly need a domestic flight.

What is a domestic flight in Maldives?
A domestic flight in Maldives is a scheduled flight between two airports within the country — usually between Velana International Airport (Malé) and one of the local airports scattered across the archipelago. Unlike the seaplane, domestic flights operate day and night, have greater capacity and are generally more cost-efficient per kilometre flown.
When do you need a domestic flight?
Maldives has more than 1,200 islands spread across 26 atolls over 900 km of ocean. The atolls closest to Malé are reached by seaplane or speedboat. But those in the south — and some in the north — are so far away that neither option is viable. That is where domestic flights come in.
Domestic airports in Maldives: main routes
Maldives has several operational domestic airports. These are the most relevant for travellers:

In most cases, the domestic flight does not take you directly to your resort. After landing, you will need a speedboat or dhoni (traditional Maldivian boat) to cover the final leg to your island — a journey that typically takes between 15 and 45 additional minutes.
Where is the domestic flights terminal?
When you arrive in Maldives, international flights land at Terminal 1. If you need to connect to a domestic flight, you will have to collect your luggage — it is not a true connecting flight. You must go through immigration and then make your way to Terminal 2. We walk you through the process in the video below:
The domestic flight experience
Domestic flights in Maldives are operated on medium-sized propeller aircraft, mainly the ATR 72 and the De Havilland Dash 8 — planes with a capacity of 50 to 70 passengers, larger and more comfortable than a seaplane. The flight is smooth, at a higher altitude than the seaplane, and while you won’t get those low-level gliding views over the atolls, the scenery from the windows is still spectacular.
One important advantage: unlike the seaplane, which can only fly during the day, domestic flights also operate at night. If your international flight arrives in the evening — say, from 6 pm onwards — you can connect to a domestic flight and reach your destination without waiting until the next day.
Booking domestic flights in Maldives
It is unusual to book directly, as communication with the airlines can be difficult and local agencies usually offer better prices. In some cases the resort arranges the domestic flight for you, just as it does with the seaplane — but many online booking platforms do not include it. Operators: Maldivian, Manta Air and Villa Air
There are three airlines operating domestic flights in Maldives. Hotels and resorts usually work with just one of them, and in many cases the operator is determined by the island you are travelling to.
Maldivian (Island Aviation Services)
The national airline of Maldives and the country’s main domestic carrier. It covers most routes to the southern and northern atolls, including Addu, Fuvahmulah, Baa, Raa, Laamu and Haa Dhaalu. It operates ATR 72 and Dash 8 aircraft. Flights run on fixed schedules several times a week on each route.
Manta Air
In addition to its seaplane routes, Manta Air operates turboprop domestic flights to several destinations including Dharavandhoo (Baa) and Maafaru (Noonu). A more recent player, it offers a modern fleet and greater scheduling flexibility on some routes.
Villa Air / Flyme
A private operator based at Maamigili Airport (Villa International Airport) in South Ari Atoll, owned by a group that also runs several resorts. They operate flights between Velana, Maamigili and Dharavandhoo, making them the option for local islands and some resorts in the Baa and Ari atolls. More information at villaair.aero.

Is the domestic flight included in your booking?
It depends on how you have booked. Resorts located in atolls only reachable by domestic flight require one to get there, but many online platforms do not include it in the room price.

Prices and duration of domestic flights in Maldives
Prices vary depending on the route and operator. These are the indicative ranges for 2026:
- Short routes (Maamigili, Dharavandhoo, Maafaru): $100–150 per person per way
- Medium routes (Kadhdhoo, Kooddoo, Hanimaadhoo): $150–250 per person per way
- Long routes (Gan/Addu, Fuvahmulah): $200–300 per person per way

Baggage allowance on domestic flights in Maldives
Domestic flights in Maldives have baggage limits similar to those of the seaplane, though generally somewhat more flexible given the larger aircraft.
The standard Maldivian allowance is:
- Checked luggage: 20 kg per person
- Hand luggage: 5 kg per person
- Sports equipment: check with the airline or resort — extra charges may apply
Excess baggage is charged by the kilo. If you are travelling with a lot of luggage, check in advance.

In most cases your destination determines the option. This table summarises the key differences to help you get your bearings:

The domestic flight is the right choice when the seaplane cannot reach your destination. For mid-range atolls (Ari, Baa, Noonu), the seaplane is usually more direct since it lands right at the resort. In some cases there are two options available, so you will need to weigh the pros and cons.

Practical tips before your domestic flight in Maldives
- Confirm whether the domestic flight is included in your booking. Don’t take it for granted. Many online platforms do not include it even when the resort does manage it. An unexpected bill of several hundred euros on arrival is not a pleasant surprise.
- Factor in the speedboat leg. The flight drops you at a local airport, which in many cases is not your final destination.
- Check your route’s flight frequency. Not all routes have daily flights — some operate only three or four times a week. This can affect your arrival and departure plans.
- Changes and cancellations do happen. Unfortunately, schedule changes and even cancellations are not uncommon, especially in the low season.
- Unlike the seaplane, you can fly at night. If your international flight arrives late, a domestic connection that same evening may be possible — no need to sleep in Malé.
- Arrive at the airport early. Velana Airport is not huge, but domestic flights have their own terminal and check-in counters. We recommend being at the check-in desk around 90 minutes before departure.

Frequently asked questions about domestic flights in Maldives
You need a domestic flight when your resort or destination is in an atoll too far for the seaplane or speedboat. The most common cases are southern atolls such as Addu, Fuvahmulah or Laamu, and some northern ones like Haa Dhaalu. If your resort is in the Ari, Baa or Noonu atolls, you are more likely to use a seaplane.
It depends on the resort and how you have booked. Many luxury resorts in distant atolls include the domestic flight and the speedboat leg in the price. However, many online platforms do not show it in the base price. Always check your booking terms or ask the resort directly before you travel.
Yes. Unlike the seaplane, domestic flights have no time restriction and can operate at night. If your international flight arrives late, it may be possible to connect to a domestic flight that same night without having to stay overnight in Malé.
The standard allowance is 20 kg of checked luggage plus 5 kg of hand luggage per person, similar to the seaplane. Excess baggage carries an additional charge. If you are travelling with sports equipment, check with the operator or resort before you travel.
The seaplane lands directly in front of the resort on the water — it is more direct but only flies during the day and has limited coverage to mid-range atolls. The domestic flight arrives at a local airport on land and from there you need a speedboat for the final leg, but it covers the most distant atolls and can fly at night. The right option depends on where your resort is.
It varies by route. The most in-demand routes (such as Gan or Kadhdhoo) have several flights a week, but not necessarily daily. Some less-frequented routes operate only three or four times a week. It is important to confirm this with your resort to plan your arrival and departure dates correctly.
