Most travellers visiting Maldives already know that getting around the islands isn’t cheap — but let’s answer the big question: how much do transfers in Maldives actually cost?
Those who arrive without much knowledge of the destination can sometimes get a nasty surprise: if you’ve booked your accommodation online or with someone who didn’t explain it properly, you may end up paying quite a lot on arrival at the airport.
The bad news is that, yes, getting to your hotel is expensive compared to almost any other destination. But the exact answer depends on what type of transport you use and how far your island is. In this guide we explain how much each type of transfer costs in Maldives, with updated prices, so you can plan your budget without surprises.
Maldives transfer prices: how much does it cost to get around?
Before going into detail, here is a summary table with indicative price ranges for each type of transfer from Velana International Airport (Malé) or Malé city:

Public ferry price in Maldives
The public ferry is by far the cheapest option. Operated by MTCC, it connects Malé with the local islands of North Malé Atoll and other nearby atolls at very low prices.
The public ferry costs between 2 and 10 USD per person per leg, depending on the route. It is the transfer option in Maldives most focused on locals — they use it for their everyday journeys, which explains the price.
The main downside is that it doesn’t reach all destinations, has very few departures, is very slow, runs on fixed schedules (not always convenient for international flight arrivals) and can be cancelled in bad weather. It is not an option for reaching a resort.
In general, the public ferry is only useful if you're staying on a well-connected local island that isn't too far away, such as Maafushi, Thulusdhoo or Dhiffushi. To reach a resort you cannot use it — you'll need a private speedboat or seaplane.
Speedboat price in Maldives
The speedboat is undoubtedly the most widely used transfer in Maldives, both for resorts and local islands. The price varies considerably depending on the distance and whether the transfer is shared or private.

For resorts, the speedboat transfer is normally operated by the resort itself and the price is usually fixed in advance. In many cases the transfer is not included in the room price and is charged separately at check-in or at the time of booking. This is worth bearing in mind, as many online platforms such as Booking.com typically don’t include it, and it can add a significant amount to your final cost.

Domestic flight price in Maldives
The domestic flight is used to reach more distant atolls that have their own airport, and is useful where the seaplane doesn’t operate or where the distance makes a speedboat impractical. The flight is often combined with a final leg by speedboat from the local airport to the final destination, unless you’re staying on the same island as the airstrip.
The price of a domestic flight plus the speedboat leg ranges between 300 and 600 USD per person round trip. The flight makes up the bulk of the cost, while the speedboat portion is usually relatively short and affordable.
One advantage of the domestic flight over the seaplane is that it operates day and night, making it compatible with almost any international arrival time. That said, it does tend to involve more waiting time than a seaplane transfer.
Seaplane price in Maldives
The seaplane is the most iconic transfer in Maldives and also one of the most expensive. The price depends mainly on the distance to the resort — in general, the farther the atoll, the higher the cost. The luxury level of the resort also plays a role: more expensive resorts tend to have higher transfer costs too.

The seaplane operators in Maldives are TMA (Trans Maldivian Airways), Manta Air and Maldivian. The price is set by the resort or the agency you book through — not by the operators directly.
It is also possible to reach some local islands by seaplane.
Important: the seaplane only operates during daylight hours, typically between 6:00 and 16:00. If your international flight arrives at night, you will need to overnight in Malé or use a domestic flight as an alternative.
Always check before booking whether the transfer is included or is an additional cost.
Is the transfer included in the resort price?
This is one of the most common questions, and the answer is: it depends. There is no fixed rule in Maldives.
In general, higher-category resorts tend to include the transfer or offer it as part of a package, while mid-range resorts usually charge for it separately. For local islands, the transfer is almost never included in the accommodation price.
Before booking, always check the resort’s listing to see whether the transfer appears as “included”, “available at extra cost” or isn’t mentioned at all. If it’s not clear, ask your travel agent or the resort directly.
When do you pay for the transfer in Maldives?
Depending on the resort and the type of transfer, payment can be made in three different ways:
- When booking your stay: many resorts let you add the transfer as an extra during the booking process. This is the most convenient option as everything is confirmed before you travel.
- At check-in at the resort: some resorts charge for the transfer directly at the property, usually adding it to your room bill.
- At Velana Airport: for speedboats to local islands, you can sometimes pay at the airport desks or directly with the operator at the jetty.

It depends on the type of transfer and the distance. A speedboat to a nearby resort can cost between 100 and 200 USD per person one way. A seaplane to a mid-range atoll resort is around 300–500 USD per person. A domestic flight plus speedboat runs between 150 and 300 USD per person one way. The public ferry only serves local islands and costs between 2 and 10 USD.
The seaplane is expensive for several reasons: it operates with small aircraft (maximum 15–19 passengers), maintenance costs are high, and pilots and crew are highly specialised. On top of that, everything in Maldives is expensive. Prices are also set by the resorts with their own margins. For many resorts, the seaplane is the only way to get there from Malé airport. Despite the price, arriving by seaplane flying over the lagoon is an experience hard to beat.
Some ways to reduce the cost: choose an agency that includes the transfer in the package, combine a resort stay with time on a local island (speedboat much cheaper), book the transfer through your agency rather than directly with the resort (sometimes a better price), or choose resorts in atolls close to Malé that are reached by speedboat instead of seaplane.
