Velana International Airport has recently been expanded to handle far more visitors than the old terminal, which had become seriously overcrowded. That growth is just as visible in the boat traffic — more and more speedboats arrive and depart to take travellers to their islands. But in a relatively compact space, there’s a lot going on, and it can feel a little chaotic.

Most resorts have a representative at the airport holding a name board, and many also have a small counter in the domestic terminal where staff will help you find your boat. For local island transfers, some guesthouses send someone to the counter — others don’t. That’s why it’s not always obvious where your speedboat is or where to go.

Tracking your speedboat with FollowMe in Maldives

How to use FollowMe step by step to find your transfer

The process is simple and requires no account or registration. Follow these steps from inside the airport terminal:

1. Open your browser and go to m.followme.mv/public. You’ll see a list of registered vessels with their current positions.
2. Use the search bar (FIND) and type the operator or boat name — for example “coral”, “maafushi” or “river”. You can also use the direct links in the table below. If boarding time is approaching, look for the boats that are moving — that’s how you spot yours.
3. Click the boat name to open its details. You’ll see a map with its exact position, its current speed, and the time of the last GPS update.
4. If the operator runs several boats — which is common — look for the one currently moving towards the airport or closest to your departure point. That’s your speedboat.
5. Bear in mind that the map background is static, not live. What updates in real time is the arrow showing the boat’s position — the satellite imagery underneath does not.

What information does FollowMe show you?

When you open a vessel’s details on FollowMe, you’ll find:

• Position on the map: a boat icon on the Maldives map that updates in real time. You can see whether it’s at the Malé jetty, crossing an atoll, or approaching Velana airport.
• Current speed: in knots. A speedboat underway typically travels between 20 and 35 knots. If the speed is 0, the boat is stationary — it may be moored at a jetty or waiting for passengers.
• Last update time: the exact time the last GPS signal was received. If the update is more than 30–60 minutes old, the device may be switched off or out of coverage.
• Boat name and operator: useful when searching through a list of several boats from the same operator and you need to identify which one is yours.

💡 Tip: if you can see the speedboat has been stationary near Velana airport for over an hour but you can't find anyone at the transfer jetty, it may have already arrived and be waiting. Head down to the boat transfer dock on the ground floor of the airport.

Arriving in Maldives and finding your boat

Once you know how to use FollowMe, we recommend connecting to the airport Wi-Fi or your SIM/eSIM as soon as you land and checking the platform while you go through passport control and baggage reclaim.

Waiting at Velana airport

Velana International Airport (MLE) is the mandatory transit point for virtually every traveller arriving in Maldives. As soon as you exit baggage reclaim, you’ll face one of two situations: either your speedboat is already waiting at the jetty, or you’ll need to wait for it to arrive.

The maritime transfer terminal is located in the domestic terminal area. You’ll find representatives from resorts, local island hotels and guesthouses holding signs — but they’re not always easy to spot, and sometimes they’re in a different part of the airport. That’s exactly why having FollowMe open on your phone is useful.

The airport has free Wi-Fi, though it’s limited to around one hour and doesn’t always work reliably.

The wait for your speedboat can vary a lot — anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours, depending on your destination and whether several flights have landed at the same time. What to know before you search for your boat

• Not all operators are registered. Some guesthouses and less-travelled destinations haven’t joined the system yet. If you can’t find your boat, contact your accommodation directly.
• The position updates in real time. If you see the boat moving towards Velana airport, it’s on its way. You can estimate the arrival time from the distance shown on the map.
• With multiple boats from the same operator, look for the closest one. Many operators run fleets of 3 to 8 boats. The one heading towards you is the one you’ll see moving in the direction of the airport or your island.
• GPS can have minor delays. The signal updates every few seconds, but in areas with weaker satellite coverage there may be a 1–2 minute lag. This doesn’t affect your ability to tell whether the boat is en route.
• Seaplanes don’t appear on FollowMe. This system is for watercraft only. If your transfer is by seaplane, tracking works differently — flights run on fixed schedules and your resort will confirm your departure time when you book.
